Part 2: "Deck the Halls (After You Clear Them): The Pre-Holiday Declutter"

Before you bring out the holiday magic, let's make room for it. Nothing kills holiday joy faster than trying to decorate around piles of clutter.

The Reality Check: Your holiday decorations deserve better than competing with everyday mess for space and attention.

The 2-Week Pre-Holiday Declutter Plan

Week 1: Clear the Decks

Focus on the spaces where holiday magic happens:
Living Areas (Day 1-2)

Remove 10 items that don't belong
Clear all surfaces completely
Create designated spots for items that usually migrate

Kitchen/Dining (Day 3-4)

Clear counters for holiday baking prep
Make space in pantry for holiday ingredients
Declutter dishes/servingware (donate duplicates)

Entry/Mudroom (Day 5-7)

Make room for guests' coats
Clear surfaces for holiday cards and packages
Create a designated gift drop zone

Week 2: Make Space for Memories

Storage Areas

Clear space for decoration storage containers
Sort through last year's decorations as you retrieve them
Create "donation" pile for unused holiday items

Guest Spaces

If hosting overnight guests, clear guest room/space
Remove non-essential items from guest bathroom
Make closet space for visitors' belongings

The 15-Minute Holiday Clutter RulesEvery evening before holiday decorating:

5 minutes: Put away items that accumulated during the day
5 minutes: Load dishwasher and clear kitchen counters
5 minutes: Quick pickup of main living area

What NOT to Declutter Right Now:

Your entire house (save energy for decorating!)
Sentimental items (decision fatigue kills holiday spirit)
Kids' rooms (unless they volunteer to help)

This Week's Action Steps:

Walk through your home and identify the 3 spaces most important for holiday activities
Set a timer for 15 minutes and start with the most visible area
Involve the family - make it a game with upbeat holiday music
Bag donations immediately and put them in your car
Reward yourself when each space is complete
